The Migration and Passport Office of the Principality of Liechtenstein is responsible for issuing passports and identity cards to its citizens. Over recent years, the entire application and issuance process has been continuously optimized to deliver greater efficiency for both citizens and the administration—while ensuring the highest security standards.
A major milestone was the introduction of live enrolment in 2024: paper forms and brought-in passport photos became obsolete. Biometric data is captured directly on-site, reducing errors and guaranteeing compliance with ICAO standards. Identity cards have been issued directly upon successful application for quite some time now.
With the launch of the new passport on 3 February 2026, this convenience will also apply to passports: citizens will be able to take their new passport home right after applying. This requires cutting-edge security in production and personalization, as well as seamless integration into existing workflows.
The presentation will showcase how Liechtenstein successfully combines operational efficiency and technological security bringing benefits to citizens and authorities alike.
