Central banks face increasing challenges in designing banknotes that balance durability, usability, connection and security against evolving counterfeiting threats. Banco de España has developed ABT (Application of Banknotes and Technology), a comprehensive and unbiased database developed to support evidence-based decision-making in the design of new banknotes and the integration of advanced security features. Comprising 9,822 banknotes from 180 countries, and 837 concept banknotes from 32 manufacturers, represent 91% of banknotes in circulation. To date, 586 banknotes from the most recent series have been thoroughly analysed, with the number steadily increasing as additional issues are received. ABT consolidates up-to-date information from multiple domains, including design’s elements, technologies, substrates and security features. By providing structured, comparable data, it enables Central Banks to evaluate trends, emerging technologies and global best practices. Through the ABT, the Banco de España offers access to a valuable database and tailored professional reports. By combining rigorous analysis with a comprehensive and evolving archive, the ABT delivers precise, up to date information and advances knowledge of the latest design and security technologies. It serves as a valuable reference for institutions engaged in the development and design of future banknote series.
