The Republic of Bulgaria will start issuing a new identity card at the end of March 2024.
The new Bulgarian identity card has been developed in accordance with the requirements specified in ICAO Doc 9303, regulation (EU) 2019/1157 of the European parliament and of the council of 20 June 2019 on strengthening the security of identity cards and all standards and requirements valid at the time of creation of the identity card.

The creation of Bulgarian Identity documents is responsibility of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Bulgaria. A team from the Ministry develops each generation of Identity documents, starting with the creation of conceptual projects, selection of a theme, development of technical specifications, security graphic design and work projects for the printing house, as well as the selection of machines for their personalization.

All types of Bulgarian ID cards are made of polycarbonate, ensuring reliable use of at least 10 years and allowing personal data to be applied in more than one layer, including the layer with offset printing. Security elements are embedded in different layers of the polycarbonate body to make the counterfeiting difficult.

Some of security features in the new ID card:

– New secure graphic design;

– Full Data Protection layer with DOVID elements, including metallized section that protects face of the card

– Photo protected with invisible personal information;

– Repeated photo of the holder by laser perforation, like shadow;

– Repeated photo of the holder on the back of the document
