This presentation addresses the eco-design of Euro banknotes, highlighting key challenges and opportunities in enhancing sustainability. We review past efforts and emphasise the importance of eco-design principles. Key outcomes from the 2019 Product Environmental Footprint study are discussed, focusing on extending banknote lifespan, using lower-impact materials, and improving disposal. The eco-design tool is introduced and its use in the process is
explained when assessing potential design changes, including substrates, security features, and end-of-life treatments. Strategies for stakeholder engagement and public awareness are outlined, emphasising the role of education.
