280 people from 131 organisations and 43 countries took part, which was the maximum capacity of the venue – a spectacular modernistic structure overlooking the Formula 1 race track and marina. Over the course of three days, delegates enjoyed a combination of seminars, plenary sessions and a vibrant social programme including the opportunity to visit the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the conference dinner on the hotel lawn, where the HSP Regional Banknote and ID Awards of the Year were presented.

The second seminar run by identity verification solutions provider Onfido focused on document fraud in an online environment and the challenges organisations deal with when trying to authenticate documents remotely.
The main programme was opened by Saif Al Dhaheri, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the UAE, welcoming delegates and providing an introduction to the country and its business- and investment-friendly environment.
Presentations followed from Oumolat on the history of the seven -year old printworks in Abu Dhabi, its achievements to date and its plans for the future and from platinum sponsors Komori on sustainability, and in particular the measures the company has taken since 2010, making it one of the green pioneers in the industry. The Austrian State Printing House OeSD closed the session with a presentation on the revamp of the EU Laissez-Passer, an e-travel document issued by the EU to representatives and staff members of the European Commission.

The programme then split into the separate currency and ID tracks, with the currency sessions covering Regional Currency Developments, Design and Security, Production and Sustainability, and Understanding the Cash Cycle.
Among the highlights, the Bank of Spain talked about Neurocash, a joint project with the Universitat Politècnica de València (LENI) on the neuroscience behind banknote design, which is now being offered as a commercial service; Philopateer explained how a distance mapping project at the Central Bank of Egypt’s new printworks resulting in minor modifications to workflow and operators’ movements made significant improvements in productivity; Magyar Nemzeti Bank spoke on the drivers for cash demand; and Landqart shared the stage with Banknote Factory of the National Bank of Kazakhstan on to go through the 20,000 tenge banknote of the ‘Qazaq Eli’ series.
The Design and Security session heard from KURZ with an update on the latest KINEGRAM® features; from Oberthur Fiduciaire on its new Pulsar™ micro-mirror colour shifting thread, from IQ Structures on the use of artificial intelligence in DOVID design, and from Landqart on the design and creative opportunities provided by its Durasafe substrate.
The Production and Sustainability session led off with a presentation from Reconnaissance on its white paper on repurposing end of life banknotes, before hearing from Koenig & Bauer on how flexible and simple processes are the key to efficiency; from Giesecke+Devrient on plant engineering, in which it gave examples of the new printworks and cash centre in Egypt (for which it was prime contractor), as well as a new production facility for passports in Bangladesh and installations of paper mills and foil production facilities in Asia; and from Hunkeler on sustainability in the banknote destruction process.
The final cash-related session heard from the International Currency Association on its new white paper with key recommendations to policymakers on how to safeguard cash; from SICPA on steps towards a more sustainable cash cycle and from Secura Monde who, in a presentation entitled ‘Illusion and Paradox in a Changing World’ emphasised that whilst Level 1 features are essential to maintain the integrity of currency, increasing automation in the cash cycle means that Level 2 features are becoming ever more important.
Meanwhile the ID track opened with a four-paper session on recent developments in passports. The session included presentations from HID Global on the new Bahraini passport, IN Groupe in France on the new Seychelles passport, the Turkish State Mint on the new Turkish passport and Fedpol in Switzerland on the redesign of the Swiss passport.
The following session focused on design and features for travel and identity documents, with presentations from Luminescence Sun Chemical on security features in passport booklets, Jura on designing documents in a changing world, Veridos on protecting documents using windows and IDEMIA on quantum computers and how they affect cryptography in ID documents.
The final ID session saw three presentations on document fraud and anti-counterfeiting. They included a paper from Secure Identity Alliance on the who, what, when, and why of document fraud, a presentation from Onfido covering recent developments and trends in document fraud, and a paper from Heidelberg on origination equipment for hologram production and how it can help protect travel and identity documents.
The final session of the conference focused on technology, with fascinating presentations from the Industrial Innovation Group, the company behind the construction of Egypt’s’ new security printing centre NASPS, from IQ Structures on innovative solutions for polycarbonate IDs, and from Hueck Folien on the eye catching DOVID – the Spirit of Gizeh – that it created for the African Currency Forum in January.
Reconnaissance is now shifting its focus to the next HSP Latin America event, which takes place in Nassau, Bahamas from 5-7 June, and HSP Asia, which takes place in Sri Lanka from 4-6 December.
For the next HSP EMEA, a poll was taken among delegates as to their preferred location, and the overwhelming winner was Sofia. So in March 2024 HSP EMEA will be going to Bulgaria.

So, this was my ‘first one’!! It was a must. Really enjoyed the subjects and presentations. Hopefully I’ll be back! Many thanks.
Good venue – excellent! A pity what is happening in the world – great that it still happened! Well done!
Great location, beautiful gala dinner, interesting working conference. Useful sessions raising new ideas.

It has been splendid, excellent presentations from distinguished players in the currency and ID documents ecosystem. The coronavirus threat couldn’t stop HSP EMEA, Lisbon, Portugal!
Continues to be a very interesting conference that lets us know the news and good practices used by partner as well as trends.
It was worth coming to this conference even more/although difficulties of corona. But we could meet our customers and hear great presentations.

Programme
Tuesday 7 March 2023
09:00 – 12:30 Currency – DOVIDS for Currency – Technologies, Market Dynamics and Recent Developments
Paul Dunn & Micaal Sidorov, International Hologram Manufacturers Association
Diffractive optically variable image devices (DOVID) of which holograms are a specific type have been used for the protection of banknotes for over three decades now. They were first introduced as an anti-copying feature and few people in the highly conservative banknote industry thought that their use would ever catch on. The subsequent take-up was slow – due not just to the banknote community’s traditional caution over an unproven technology coupled with the long gestation period for new banknote features, but also the limited availability of suppliers and application equipment, and the expense.
This seminar will cover all aspects including material science, technologies, production, application, history, design and features of diffractive security foils on banknotes. It will present an overview of the technologies, industry and the latest trends and developments driving it. It will also consider the various requirements and challenges this sector is facing, particularly from alternative optically variable products. Not least the seminar will cover counterfeiting – or more precisely, how DOVIDs can prevent it.
The seminar will be delivered on behalf of International Hologram Manufactures Association (IHMA), a non-profit organisation representing around 80 of the world’s leading hologram manufacturers whose mission is to support, set standard and advance holographic technology for authentication of products and documents and other fields of application.
09:00 – 12:30 Identity – Document Fraud in an Online Environment – the Challenges of Digital ID Verification
Michael van Gestel & Rizlane Chertah, Onfido (UK)
With the digital revolution of the 21st century, millennials, governments, and corporations have increasing requirements for self-service, quick and reliable document authentication remotely and at scale. The revolution is upon us and fraudsters have access to better technology, leaked data and a vast library of faces from social media.
This workshop will focus on the challenges global organisations deal with when trying to stop targeted attacks in a document-not-present environment.
During this interactive workshop we will share some of the latest fraud rings we have detected and the results of our research that can help you make better informed decisions regarding document authenticity in an online environment.
Afternoon Tour – Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi
On the afternoon of Tuesday 7th March delegates will be offered the opportunity to attend a tour to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.
This is the largest mosque in the UAE and can hold up to 40,000 worshippers and 15,000 visitors. The mosque was commissioned by, and named after, the first president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Respectful clothing is a requirement for visitors to enter Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
