HSP-EMEA Makes Its African Debut with a Record Audience

Access to the presentations is limited to HSPE 2026 attendees, please use the password which was provided by the [email protected]

This February, HSP EMEA marked its 22nd edition with its largest event yet. For the first time, the conference was on the African continent (Rabat, in Morocco), highlighting the region’s growing economic momentum and role in global technology and development, particular as regards secure printing, identity management, and related technologies.

A record 341 delegates from 146 organisations in 49 countries attended, a 28% increase from last year. A notable rise in central bank and government delegations gave the event a different regional balance compared with previous editions.

Although attendance grew, Astrid Mitchell, CEO of Reconnaissance, emphasised that the main priority of the conference is the quality of engagement and insights, not just the numbers, adding that the HSP platforms remain firmly focused on building meaningful collaboration across the industry and on supporting a stronger, more connected high-security printing ecosystem.

Workshops establish the dialogue

The day before the conference, three workshops encouraged open discussion. Two focused on currency, and one covered identity.

Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions (KBBNS) discussed financial inclusion with its three-step program: Moneybox, MoneyStart, and MoneySmart. These cash-based education tools are simple, scalable, and work for all ages, even though Moneybox looks child-friendly. The key message: early education, through the medium of physical cash, is a key step in building financial literacy and inclusion.

De La Rue’s workshop, ‘The Banknote Balancing Act’, examined how to make informed currency decisions. It included cash data from De La Rue Analytics™, the benefits of the Safeguard® polymer substrate, roundtable talks on cash challenges, and a design exercise on practical trade-offs.

The identity workshop, led by Entrust and Keesing Technologies, looked at how issuers, manufacturers, and verifiers influence the effectiveness of identity documents. Using real case studies, the session explored physical, digital, and hybrid identity fraud, such as forgery, deepfakes, and credential theft, with group discussions and scenario-based exercises.

Program begins with Currency and ID in the EMEA region

The conference began with a welcome from the Managing Director of Dar As-Sikkah, Hassan Regraga, who introduced Morocco’s currency operations. Ahmed Lemrhabbar and Liwa-Eddine Anjjar shared details on the print and minting facilities respectively, while Hashem Mogahed from Egypt’s Ministry of Justice discussed the counterfeiting threat to security documents in the region and IN Groupe presented its LASINK™ technology.

The programme was then split into two parallel tracks.

Track 1: Currency

The currency sessions covered regional developments, sustainability, data-driven authentication, and new production methods.

The first of those included Landqart d’s growing Durasafe® program (now used in 11 countries, 23 denominations, and over two billion notes), PWPW’s commemorative banknote for the millennium coronation of Poland’s first king, and the US Currency Education program.

The Dutch National Bank explained how Intelligent Banknote Neutralisation Systems operate in the Netherlands, particularly for the cross-border movement of notes damaged in ATM attacks, and shared ideas for improved protection. Banco de España introduced its Application of Banknotes and Technology (ABT), a reference tool covering banknotes from 180 countries.

The sustainability session, with CCL Secure, Papierfabrik Louisenthal, SICPA, and Kusters, highlighted a continued shift away from landfilling unfit notes, although progress has slowed. A survey revealed that central banks prioritise carbon reduction and sustainable procurement, while industry places greater emphasis on durability.

In a survey during the session of central banks and other industry delegates about their sustainability priorities, the priorities were slightly different.

Reducing carbon footprints Introducing sustainability in procurement Increasing the durability of banknotes Setting organisational sustainability targets
Central bank 65% 59% 59% 54%
Industry delegates 57% 36% 68% 54%

Data took centre stage in the authentication and intelligence session

Parvis gave a powerful and persuasive explanation of the importance and usefulness of production data and G+D spoke about the benefits of its Compass Business Intelligence from quality control through to the cash cycle.

Regula’s presentation, although quite technical looking at amplitude comparison and 2D Fast Fourier Transform analysis, gave food for thought about what careful analysis can tell you.

Jura focused on eco-friendly platemaking and the benefits of S-DLE (steel direct laser engraving), while De La Rue’s Safeguard presentation made the case for moving to a polymer substrate addressing ‘why not’ questions.

The last currency session looked at new production methods. Komori promoted smart factories, Zeiser discussed variable-data microperforation, KBBNS showcased its design and simulation tools, Oberthur explained its integrated design approach, and Hueck Folien previewed new optical features following recent technology acquisitions.

Track 2: Identity

The identity program began with a session on the future of identity and travel documents. Speakers from Toppan Security, the former HSI Forensic Laboratory, and Liechtenstein authorities discussed using colour as a security tool, lessons from fake driver’s licenses, and a new model case for passport and ID issuance.

The afternoon shifted to a design-led approach. Whilst the National Identification Authority of Ghana briefed on digital identity ecosystems, a presentation from the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board shared the story behind their award-winning new-generation national ID card, issued from November 2025. IQ structures shared insights on how design approaches facilitated a smooth transition to polycarbonate documents.

ANY Security presented a collaborative sample ePassport, developed with partners including SICPA, IQ Structures, BP Security, Hueck Folien and ANY SecLab. Framed as a ‘journey through security, art and collaboration,’ the booklet showed how a coherent design can support an integrated security architecture.

The following session on physical and digital identity combined technology and policy perspectives. Speakers presented next-generation optical security features, new promotional and national ID cards, large-scale identity transformation projects such as Liberia’s foreigner register, Georgia’s new e-passport and eID, and strategies to counter AI-generated document fraud.

An interesting case was the Georgian presentation. Developed by Veridos in collaboration with the Public Service Development Agency (Ministry of Justice) and designer Nino (Nitta) Gongadze, the programme aligns six passport types and four identity cards across materials, features, and visuals.

The final identity session addressed the physical–digital interface, covering hybrid tax stamps (Luminescence/JURA), data-driven operational optimisation (SisTrade Software), smartphone authentication based on quantum effects (Quantum Base), dynamic optical features (Demax) and the future direction of tax stamps and traceability systems (ITSA).

Session 6: Innovation and technology

At the end, delegates came back together for the final joint session on emerging technologies and innovation.

Bundesdruckerei explained how it has reorganised its R&D structure, a presentation that generated strong interest and discussion.

RAITH presented multi-angle 3D computer-generated holograms produced through high-throughput laser beam lithography.

Seaborough then introduced its Lumicrypt™ feature, which uses nano-engineered luminescent pigments to deliver tailored security effects, followed by NovaVera’s presentation on advanced inorganic taggants for digital printing.

Networking, awards and football

Outside the sessions, HSP EMEA continued it tradition of serving as the region’s leading networking platform. The programme included extended exhibition hours, welcome receptions on 8 and 9 February, a gala dinner on 10 February, plus a closing cocktail reception the following day.

The gala dinner Palais Jawhara also included the regional awards ceremony, which recognised excellence in banknote and ID design.

There were three categories for the Banknote Awards – Best New Banknote (won by Libya), Best New Series (jointly by Namibia and Zambia) and Best New Commemorative Banknote (Bank Al-Maghrib for its new commemorative 100 dirham banknote, issued to celebrate the 35th Africa Cup of Nations -AFCON).

In addition, HSP EMEA is host to the annual Best House Note Award – which went jointly to Polish Security Printing Works (PWPW) for the MEADOW housenote and LEONHARD KURZ for Tree of Life housenote series, created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the company’s production site in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany.

A new addition, The Best New Process or Technology (Currency) award was presented to Koenig and Bauer Banknote Solutions (KBBS) for its Nota-Live™ technology, an advanced real-time 3D simulation software developed in partnership with Fathom Optics.

For the ID awards, there were categories: Best New National ID Card, Best New Passport, Best New Document Series, Best New Travel Document, and Best New House Passport. The winners, in order, were the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board, Liechtenstein, Georgia, Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) and ANY Security Printing Company.

The traditional football match, sponsored by Zeiser, offered a relaxed and lively end to the week’s discussions.

With this historic African debut now complete, Reconnaissance looks ahead to the rest of the 2026 global series: HSP Latin America in Guatemala this June and HSP Asia in Hong Kong this December.

And next year, HSP EMEA will take place in Vienna, Austria, in early March 2027.

09:00 – 12:15 Currency – The Empowering & Educational Value of Banknotes

Thomas Hendle, Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions

Overview
Financial literacy plays a critical role in life outcomes, social cohesion, and national development. Yet nearly half the world continues to face financial capability gaps, many of which begin in early childhood.

Research shows that money related understanding and behaviour are shaped before the age of six, and that early, hands-on interaction with money is key to developing lifelong financial skills.

Why Banknotes?
Banknotes remain a child’s first tangible experience of value. Their physicality offers unique learning benefits, helping young people grasp core concepts such as earning, spending, saving, budgeting, and financial decision-making in a way digital transactions often cannot replicate.

Recent international research (full white paper available at the event) highlights the continuing importance of physical currency in building foundational financial competencies that transfer to both physical and digital money use later in life.

The Global MoneyBox Initiative
In response, Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions has launched a pioneering, multi-country programme that uses banknotes as an educational tool on an unprecedented scale. Early results show strong engagement from young learners, teachers, NGOs and public institutions.

The MoneyBox Pre-Conference Workshop will inspire participants to look at banknotes through an entirely different lens to reimagine and redefine exactly what they bring to society and become part of a global movement to create significant positive social impact by simply doing what we love doing – making banknotes.

Participants will leave with a new perspective on the societal value of banknotes and how our industry can contribute to lifelong financial empowerment.

09:00 – 12:00 ID – Unmasking Identity Fraud: Physical and Digital Document Threats Through Real Case Studies

Michael Van Gestel – Entrust & Maickel van Oijen – Keesing Technologies

When designing identity documents, how do the priorities differ between the issuer, the manufacturer, and the verifier, and which perspective ultimately determines the document’s effectiveness against fraud?

Identity fraud remains one of the most pervasive threats in today’s interconnected world, exploiting both physical and digital vulnerabilities. This interactive seminar dives deep into the evolving tactics fraudsters use to manipulate identity documents whether forged passports, counterfeit driver’s licenses, or digitally altered credentials and the devastating impact these schemes can have on individuals and organisations.

Through real-world case studies, participants will explore:

Physical Document Fraud: Techniques used in forgery, tampering, and impersonation, and how frontline detection methods can fail.

Digital Identity Fraud: Emerging trends in synthetic identities, deepfakes, and credential theft in online ecosystems.

Hybrid Attacks: How fraudsters combine physical and digital tactics for maximum deception.

The session will feature group discussions, and scenario-based problem-solving.

13:00 – 16:30 Currency – The Banknote Balancing Act – Making Informed Currency Choices

De La Rue Workshop. This will be open to central banks and governments only.

As central banks you face many important choices when it comes to managing your currency, from design and durability to cost, sustainability and public trust. This interactive workshop explores some of those choices, why they matter, and how data and expert insight can help guide the process. You’ll have the chance to share your thoughts, learn from others, and take part in a practical exercise where you’ll balance competing needs and priorities to make strategic currency decisions.

The use of machinery to issue and deposit cash is increasing at every point in the cash cycle.  The ability to capture, store, share and analyse data is being revolutionised.  Standardisation of packaging, reporting and data is driving efficiency. Business models are not standing still.  Sustainability is on the agenda. All of this feeds into the opportunities to handle cash closer to the customer, reducing costs, increasing efficiencies and resilience and promoting sustainability.

This seminar is based on a new white paper – Cash Recirculation and Local Recycling: from Policy to Practice – and brings together a range of stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities, with real-life examples of how new models of cash distribution can enhance more universal and cost-effective access to and acceptance of cash.
